Cosmelan
Your Cosmelan journey - All you need to know!
You have begun your depigmentation journey! Now here is what to expect with your treatment process!
The products utilise the power and strength of very active ingredients and the products need to be used with care and the instructions followed. The products will differ to other skincare you may have used in the past, therefore be different than what you’re used to.
If you haven’t used skincare of a similar strength before, or if your skin happens to be delicate or even in an “unhealthy” condition to begin with, your skin will need some time to adjust. The idea is to create healthy skin, functioning in optimal condition. When your skin is in optimal condition it does not overproduce oil and cause breakouts, nor does it overproduce melanin and cause pigmentation. It does not lose collagen and elastin which causes wrinkles, sagging and premature aging. Skin behaving in a healthy manner will also maintain its structure to help prevent any future damage to the skin.
The initial adjusting period on the road to this healthy skin can induce a number of side effects that may feel a little alarming at first – especially without knowing what is happening to your skin and if you have never used active skin care products before.
You may experience some redness, flaking, possible itching and irritation, through out the Cosmelan process: Do not stress, this is completely normal and only temporary while your skin adjusts to the active ingredients in your Products.
So… what is happening to your skin? It’s a process of increased cellular turnover.
To put a somewhat complex process very simply: this is where your skin adapts to the new rapid rate at which its cells are turning over. Cell turnover is the term used to describe the constant shedding of dead skin cells and subsequent replacement with younger cells. As we age, this process slows down -consequentially meaning dead, damaged or unhealthy cells will stick around for longer. Healthy skin in optimal condition will turnover at a rate of approximately 28 days.
This increased cell turnover is a result of the ingredients in your Cosmelan 2 cream.
We call it a skincare “journey” for a reason. Your skincare journey won’t always be linear. We know how before and afters can look; as though one day the patient suffered from extreme pigmentation and within a few weeks, the skin condition was simply replaced with a clear, glowing complexion. What you don't see is that the patient actually experienced a period of redness and peeling while their skin adjusted to the active ingredients they were using to achieve the clear, glowing complexion.
We like to call it the “adjusting phase”, and it’s also a reminder that it is only temporary. Generally speaking, the adjusting phase will last one skin cycle (for most people, this is around 4 – 6 weeks, but this can change depending on your current rate of skin cell-turnover). In the same way we can’t run a marathon without training and building up endurance first, our skin will need to adjust to the new rapid rate of cell turnover the active products is encouraging.
When training for a marathon, you won’t always be out of breath and clutching at a stitch in your side. With more training, you become fitter, and as time goes on you will be able to run further and faster. The same can be said for your skin; it won’t always be red and flaky. It is training to become healthier and more resilient.
Now you know what is happening to your skin, you should know how it looks on the skin. If you’re experiencing any of the following, do not stress. It is a completely normal part of your journey to a healthier complexion:
- Redness and flaking
- Dryness and tightness
- Purging (breakouts)
- Darkening pigment
- Itching
- Swelling
- Silk pillow case
- Vasaline or barrier repair balm to put around delicate areas like your eyes, corners of the nose and lips - to help stop product migration
- Avoid make up for the first 7-10 days. If make up has to be worn after that time period, it must be cosmeceutical grade and test patch the area first
- Attend your LED follow up appointments
You may notice the surface layer of your skin starting to peel or flake. Dead, dry or damaged skin cells need to be removed to make way for the healthier, new cells coming through. As a result, these excess skin cells will start to “flake” away. The new cells can also induce a reddish appearance to the skin. This can be due to the initial irritation that the products can cause and from the younger, delicate cells coming through that tend to be pinkish in appearance.
You may experience a drying affect to the skin while using the products. This is because the natural oil produced by the skin can decrease which affects your skin’s ability to retain moisture as a result of the skin adjusting to the products. As the skin loses both oil and water, the skin can initially dry out and its cells on the topmost surface die and begin to peel away.
The rapid rate at which your skins cells are turning over may result in bringing pigmentation that was happily sitting out of sight in the Dermis (the lower layers of the skin), to the surface. We know it can be a worrying sight but trust us when we say, this would have come about eventually - whether in a few months or a few years. Patients who see lightning-fast results most likely had their pigmentation sitting in the epidermis, so don’t be discouraged if the pigment doesn’t disappear in a week. Ever heard the saying, sometimes things have to get worse before they can get better? The good news is, you are getting a head start on the issue and a little bit of patience and persistence is going to pay off. The methods we use are tried and true, it may just take a little bit longer for you.
Some tips to help you along the journey!
The results will be worth the journey!

DMK Enzyme Therapy Facial
WHAT TO REMEMBER
Whilst the DMK Enzyme Therapy Treatments are designed to restore health to the skin, topical chemistry cannot guarantee a perfect outcome every time and your DMK Skin Technician cannot provide a guaranteed timeframe in which to expect optimum results.
Results will vary from person to person, as each individual skin type will respond differently. However, to maximise your opportunity to achieve the best possible results you must:
- Adhere to your full DMK Home Prescriptive program throughout the program.

- Continue with regular DMK professional treatments and your DMK Home Prescriptive regime after the program has finished to prolong the benefits achieved.
NOTE: The results experienced by each individual will vary depending on their particular skin type and condition. While some will only require one treatment, others may require several treatments over a period of time to achieve their desired results. Prior to commencing any treatment program you must inform your DMK Skin Technician of all medications you are taking and any medical conditions or allergies you are experiencing.

It is possible that you may experience some of the following temporary side effects as a result of this treatment:
- Tightness or dryness of the skin.
